Tshirt blog chart

Okay - this is a new one. In pulling together our lovely tshirt chart, we spider and do hard sums on a LOT of blogs and fansites and tshirt sites. We played with this data and came up with a new chart - a chart of the “best” blogs for finding out about new tshirts.

So how does it work? Well just like Col. Sanders - we’re not going to give away our formula. But it tries to balance activity, popularity, links, and how early they blog a new tee. So if a site is well linked by the other blogs it will chart higher, if it is first to blog a rising star teeco it will chart high, and if it posts a lot of stuff which charts on the teeco chart it will chart high. This is the first chart - I’d love some feedback - we’ve only published the top 50, but we have a top 180ish (if you want to know where you came drop me an email).

Some of these aren’t pure shirt blogs.

T-shirt Site Chart for January 2009

Another month, another chart. This month the chart grows to a top 100!! Wow. As we’ve extended the chart we’ve reset the whole thing - so everything is a new entry this month - even though they aren’t really. Well done to all those new entries at the tail of the chart. Tshirt hell jumped on the news of their demise, sadly.

Recession basher

Is it just me or did a depression used not to be as bad as a recession, but now it’s worse. What’s worse than a depression then? Deathresssion? Zombpression? Gotta be.
Whatever it’s called - it’s never so bad than you can’t afford $5 for a great tee. The fine folks over at Nerdy are working on something - so are flogging their old stuff for a $5. Replace a worn treasure, grab a bit of election ‘08 nostalgia cotton, or buy that shirt you aspired to when it was $12 - but your pocket money couldn’t quite stretch to.

In other Zombpression news - tshirt hell is biting the dust. Awww.

Corey Crowder Comp

Get Faveur are running another competition - so enter. I don’t always blog about every competition that comes along - but this one looks neat, has a proper theme (there are only two proper themes, band/musician or zombies - that’s it - I dare you to show me a design competition with a theme other than those which worked), and ain’t all about the money folks!

Thank you Sponsors

Blogs are fun, but blogs with sponsors are MORE fun because they can do cool stuff like t-shirt charts. Money makes the world go round people - money and coffee - and tshirts. Money and coffee and tshirts make the world go round.

So - thanks again to our sponsors over the past couple of months: orangealexandergetfaveur & robitstudios crazydogtshirts & bernos & cassida. Without you guys there would be no money or coffee - and as we’ve established - that makes the world go round.

If you want to sponsor the site, buy an ad, or otherwise make this little tee blogger joyous get in touch steve@omgtees.com.

Interview with Levi of Word!

It’s been a while since OMG interviewed anyone. So let’s interview Levi from Word! Apparel. Levi is pretty active on emptees, is really pushing his brand, has a new (colorful) line out, and can string more than a few words together pretty quickly. Ideal interview fodder!

But I hate lengthy preambles so lets kick straight in:

OMG> Hi Levi - So when did you start Word Apparel?

Levi> I have actually been receiving this question alot lately because I am being contacted through the BigCartel site alot for advice on starting a successful line. The first official ideas, and production started on April 30th, 2008. During the day actually haha, I was watching TV, Family Guy to be exact, and Word! Apparel started. This isn’t the first clothing line that I have been involved in. I started with Crashtide Clothing, and we had alittle success, but nothing compared to Word! Apparel.

Do you do your own designs or buy them in?

When I first started, I hired Wotto, to create a design for me, Happy Monsters, and then I picked up a few rejected designs from the likes of Josh Stomberg, and others. I have been critized for this, but the shirts have sold as fast as I can print them, so I consider it up to the customer really, and they have reacted just fine. For my new line that I am working on, I have hired Matt Skiff, and another designer to take care of the entire line. I gave them the ideas of what I wanted, and they are working on it right now. From what I have seen, the new designs are absolutely fantastic. They are for sure going to be a big deal for Word! Apparel in the beginning of 2009.

Is this a full time thing, a hobby, a religion for you?

With my schedule, which includes, working full time for Grainger, school full time at the University of Houston, I do this after all of that, but I average about 3 hours of sleep a night, and its not uncommon to go with sleep. For example, one music festival I was a vendor at, which was out of town, I went with out sleep for 2 days. Getting ready, and driving there, and driving back took the place of sleep haha. So I would consider this full time because its take all my free time, and I have even lost a girlfriend because of it, but I am in this for the long haul, so as sad as it is, I am happy with the way things are progressing. I wouldn’t consider this a hobby at all because I plan to see where this takes me in life, and I love doing this!

How did you print your first batch of tees?

For the first batch, I went with the printer I am still using, I Heart U Productions. Eric, the owner, has helped me tremondusly with getting me into events, shows, contacts, etc…He also does a fantastic job. He quality is amazing. One other advantage is he is local. So I can watch the progression of the printer as they are being printed. I would recommend him to anyone. Check him out www.iheartuproductions.com.

You use big cartel - why? what other systems did you look at before choosing those guys? - what were the killer reasons?

I use BigCartel for the simply reason as it being extremely simple to use, and I think anyone would agree with me. They basically have step-by-step instructions, and they have a super helpful FAQ section. Another reason that I enjoy BigCartel, is how customizable it is. I hired Jon Krus, from Emptees.com, to customize the webstore for me, and it has helped a tremondous amount. It is so much more professional. I will admit that I have a actual website in the works right now, but I plan to keep the BigCartel up and running just because I like using it so much. The backgrounds of the website that the admin uses, is super simply and effective. For the price, which in some cases, depending on what you need, is free, is unbeatable.

Who are you targeting, where has your best publicity come from?

I would like to say I am targeting everyone, but it just isnt true. I have narrowed down my customer base, and I am starting to apply that knowledge, and the sales have been steady coming in. I would say that I am selling mostly to the market of young teenagers. My designers are more colorful than most, and that seems to be what they are looking for. I hope I keep up the growing pattern. Its a huge market to be in, and the sky is the limit.

The best publicity I have seen is either Myspace, or concerts. Kids go to concerts to spend money on merch, and if you have something that is what they are looking for, then they are going to pick a few items up. I always see outstanding success from shows, and its a lasting memory. If you do little funny things, as in drawing mustaches on kids fingers, they will remember you, and look you up. The other channel is Myspace. Some people talk down on Myspace, but I honestly dont see why. Myspace brings in huge sales numbers if you market it right. I don’t see why someone wouldn’t take those steps to capitalize on those sales.

Thanks Levi - you up for a follow up if this goes down well?

Yeah. Of course I am!

Mingled tee video

Hurrah - 2009 WILL be the year of the tee video - I can feel it in my bones! I bet Jack Bauer could digitally enhance this video to get the guys identity though - he can enhance anything. Someone should send him the turin shroud!

Apologies to any other tee videographers who sent me links in the last couple of weeks - an email hiccup lost me some links. Resend! Resend!

Shirtcity top 10

A quick link to the top 10 shirts as sold by Shirtcity worldwide. I have to say, some of these surprised me. Shows the power of a tv idea!

I’d be REALLY interested to know what the top selling shirts from some other teecos were. Comment below or email me steve@omgtees.com and I’ll gather together a post with ‘em.

Sausage rolls

Ok. So I’m not 100% sure about the euphemistic power of the words ’sausage rolls’ and take this shirt absolutely literally because it comes from Aberdeen, Scotland. It already says ’sex and drugs’ so the scope for euphemistic flexibility is limited. I’m pretty sure it actually means a sausage pastry.

If you’ve ever been to Aberdeen you’ll know that in addition to claiming to be the oil capital of Europe, it also has reasonable claim to be the sausage roll capital of Europe. Not on quality grounds - far from it - but on grounds of consumption. In the early naughties the fine Aberdonians decided that the rowie / buttery was an inappropriate breakfast snack due to its high fat and salt content (quick recipe - one cup salt, one cup lard, one cup butter, half cup flour, water to mix = rowie mix).

So they replaced it with sausage rolls. Every morning across Aberdeenshire white vans approach newsagents, the youngest passenger jumps out and says “2 suns, a star, 2 rowies and 4 sausage rolls”*. If they smoke they also get some smokes. But this is new healthy Aberdeen we’re talking about - so only about 80% of them smoke.

Anyway - sweet shirt from Regal clothing in Aberdeen.

* these numbers will vary depending on number of people in the van.

Happy Healthy 2009

So happy new year folks. Don’t forget to eat sensibly, get some excercise, and avoid the class A! That way you’ll last the year. And make sure you are eating your 5 a day. And remember - potato doesn’t count! It doesn’t count.

But don’t be boring Don’t be predictable. Don’t be obvious. Wear a reminder in French, and keep a spare banana in your pocket!
